Beehives for Chemoson Youth: Honey, Jobs & Conservation

Beekeeping for youth in Chemoson has just taken a big step forward. The Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN) has distributed beehives to the Kalyet Tree Nursery Self Help Group, a youth group based in Chemoson, Baringo County, Kenya. For these young people, it marks the beginning of an exciting new journey into beekeeping, and a fresh opportunity to build a future rooted in their own community.

More Than Just Equipment

To the members of the Kalyet Tree Nursery Self Help Group, these beehives represent far more than wooden boxes and tools. They open a path toward a sustainable livelihood, one that fits naturally alongside the environmental conservation and tree nursery work the group is already carrying out.

It is a reminder that lasting change often starts small, with the right resources placed in the hands of people ready to put them to work.

Training That Builds Confidence

Alongside the hives, the youth received hands-on training in beekeeping and hive management. They learned how to care for their colonies, keep them healthy, and produce honey in a way that is both successful and sustainable.

This combination matters. Equipment alone can only go so far, but paired with practical knowledge, it becomes the foundation of something that can grow and endure. With both the hives and the skills to manage them, the group is now ready to turn this new venture into a lasting source of income.

Where Trees and Bees Meet

Trees and bees go hand in hand. A thriving tree nursery provides bees with the forage they need to flourish, and in return, the bees help pollinate and sustain the surrounding environment. It is a quiet, powerful partnership, each one supporting the other.

For the youth of Chemoson, this balance offers something meaningful: the chance to earn a living from honey while caring for the very land they call home. Conservation and opportunity, side by side.

Growing Hope for the Next Generation

Projects like this one show what becomes possible when young people are given the tools, the training, and the trust to shape their own future. The beehives at the Kalyet Tree Nursery Self Help Group are the first step in a journey that could ripple outward for years to come, nourishing the environment, the economy, and the community alike.

Together, we are growing more than trees and bees. We are growing hope and opportunity for the next generation.
