Esageri Women Farmers Embrace Agroecology with KOWYN.

The Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN) recently visited the Milimani Women Group in Esageri, Baringo County, to officially welcome them into our growing network of community groups. More than a formal introduction, the visit was a chance to meet face to face, learn from one another, and strengthen a shared commitment to sustainable agriculture.

Agroecology Training for Women Farmers

At the heart of the visit was a practical training session on agroecology, an approach to farming that works with nature rather than against it. Agroecology helps communities grow food, protect the soil, and keep the surrounding environment healthy, all at the same time.

The members of the Milimani Women Group learned how sustainable farming practices can improve harvests while caring for the very land that supports their families. It is knowledge that pays off season after season, building both stronger yields and healthier ecosystems.

Introducing the Farm Demonstration

During the visit, we also introduced the concept of a farm demonstration: a shared learning space where members can practice, observe, and exchange sustainable farming techniques.

The idea is simple but powerful. A farm demonstration gives women the chance to test new methods together, see the results first-hand, and then pass on what works to other farmers across the community. It turns learning into something living and collective, where every success becomes a lesson others can build on.

Young Women Leading the Way

What stood out most during the visit was the energy in the room. The enthusiasm, participation, and commitment shown by the young women were truly inspiring.

By equipping women with knowledge and practical skills, we are doing far more than teaching farming techniques. We are strengthening food security, protecting the environment, and helping to create more resilient communities in Esageri and beyond. When women lead, whole communities move forward with them.

Cultivating a Future Rooted in Indigenous Knowledge

Welcoming the Milimani Women Group into the KOWYN network is one more step toward a future we are building together, one where sustainable farming, environmental stewardship, and Indigenous knowledge go hand in hand.

Together, we are cultivating a future where communities thrive through sustainable farming, environmental stewardship, and the preservation of Indigenous knowledge.
