At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), we often talk about planting seeds of change. Today, those seeds are literally taking root. Our team visited the Sabatia Forest Day & Boarding School in Eldama Ravine, Koibatek, to follow up on our previous fruit tree planting initiative—and the results were truly heartening.

A Greener Future in Good Hands

Seeing the progress of the fruit trees was a powerful reminder of the impact of community-led environmental stewardship. The trees are thriving, and it is evident that the students and faculty have taken full ownership of their care.

Walking through the school grounds, we heard directly from the learners about their hopes for the future. They aren’t just seeing trees; they are seeing a future supply of fruit, improved nutrition, and a healthier environment for their school. This sense of pride and commitment is the cornerstone of the Seeds of Change Program, proudly supported by Cultural Survival.

Expanding the Vision: From Trees to Gardens

Our visit wasn’t just about reviewing the past; it was about planning for a more sustainable future. After seeing how successful the tree-planting project has been, we worked with the school leadership to map out a dedicated space for our next major milestone: establishing a school kitchen garden and an agroecology demonstration farm.

This new phase will allow us to:

• Promote Sustainable Farming: Providing a hands-on space where students can learn about organic farming, composting, and soil health.
• Enhance Food Security: Integrating fresh, nutrient-dense produce directly into the school’s food system.
• Bridge Theory and Practice: Turning the school grounds into a living laboratory where agroecology is learned through daily practice rather than just textbooks.
