At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), our greatest measure of success is the tangible change we see in the lives of the people we serve. We recently spent an inspiring afternoon with the Tarakwet Kamara Women Group, Tarakwet Tai Youth Group, and the Poror Ogiek Women Group, reviewing the progress of our ongoing initiatives.

The atmosphere was one of celebration and focused determination as we looked back at our accomplishments and mapped out the path ahead.

Real-World Success: From Training to Transformation

It was deeply rewarding to hear from these groups regarding the direct impact of their recent training sessions. The transformation is clear:

• Agroecology & Kitchen Gardening: Participants reported remarkable success in adopting sustainable farming methods. Many women are now successfully maintaining flourishing kitchen gardens, providing their families with nutrient-dense, chemical-free food, and generating additional household income by selling their surplus produce at local markets.
• Beekeeping & Traditional Stewardship: The groups shared success stories regarding their honey production. Beyond the financial gains, there is a profound sense of pride in reviving beekeeping—a sacred traditional practice that links the Ogiek to their forest heritage.

By mastering these skills, our community members are not just farming; they are asserting their autonomy and proving that traditional knowledge is a powerful tool for modern economic empowerment.

Mapping the Future: Expanding Our Footprint

The second half of our day was dedicated to the future. Together, we surveyed sites for the next phase of our outreach: establishing dedicated kitchen gardens and new agroecology demonstration farms in these areas.

These demonstration farms will serve as essential hubs for:

1. Hands-on Learning: Providing a space where members can practice techniques like composting, organic pest control, and soil restoration under the guidance of our experts.
2. Sustainability Scaling: Ensuring that sustainable farming becomes a standard practice across the Tarakwet and Poror regions, rather than just an isolated success.
3. Achieving Food Sovereignty: By collectively managing these resources, we are taking a definitive step toward ensuring that our community controls its own food supply, reducing dependency on external systems, and fostering long-term resilience.

A Community-Driven Path

What makes these projects so effective is that they are co-designed by the people who live them. The leaders of the Tarakwet and Poror groups have a clear vision for their land, and our role is simply to provide the technical support and resources to help that vision bloom.

We are incredibly grateful to the members of these groups for their dedication and for the warm welcome we received. Their passion for their heritage and their commitment to sustainable growth are the heartbeat of the KOWYN movement.
