At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), we believe that the strength of our advocacy is multiplied when we stand together. It was our distinct honor and privilege to host the East Africa Indigenous Women Assembly’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) right here in Eldama Ravine.

This gathering was not merely a meeting; it was a powerful convergence of vision, resilience, and leadership. Bringing together distinguished women leaders from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the event served as a testament to the fact that the struggle for Indigenous rights and empowerment knows no borders.

A Convergence of Visionary Leadership

The AGM created a vital space for Indigenous women to step out of their local contexts and engage in a broader, regional dialogue. Seeing so many brilliant minds—each representing unique ancestral traditions and grassroots struggles—unite under one roof was a profound experience.

The discussions were as inspiring as they were strategic. We focused on:

• Strengthening Our Collective Voice: Identifying common challenges faced by Indigenous women in East Africa, from systemic land dispossession to barriers in political representation.
• Strategic Advocacy: Sharing successful frameworks and tactics that have worked in our respective countries, allowing us to replicate what works and refine our approaches to policy engagement.
• Building an Inclusive Future: Outlining a roadmap for how Indigenous women can lead the way in climate action, food sovereignty, and gender justice within the East African region.

The Power of Connection

Beyond the policy discussions and strategic planning, the most significant outcome of the assembly was the deepening of our professional and personal networks. By sharing our stories, we reminded one another that we are not fighting in isolation.
