At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), we envision a future where our community thrives in harmony with the land, powered by resilient, indigenous-led agricultural systems. As part of our ongoing commitment to this vision, we recently organized an intensive agroecology training and farm demonstration for the women of the Tabut Ogiek community.

Made possible through the kind support of FIMI, this event was designed to be more than just a workshop; it was a practical roadmap for improving livelihoods through sustainable, organic agricultural practices.

Bridging Theory and Practice

Agroecology is the cornerstone of our strategy for climate resilience and food sovereignty. During this session, we moved beyond the classroom, providing participants with a hands-on farm demonstration to see these ecological principles in action.

The curriculum was comprehensive, covering essential areas to empower the women as independent, skilled farmers:

• The Power of Agroecology: Understanding how ecological farming boosts resilience against climate change while protecting the natural ecosystem.
• Organic Techniques & Soil Health: Mastering composting and natural soil fertility management to ensure the earth remains productive for generations.
• Pest and Disease Control: Learning safe, non-toxic methods to protect crops, ensuring food safety and environmental health.
• Seed Sovereignty: Deep dives into seed saving and community-based seed banking—critical steps in preserving our indigenous agricultural heritage.
• Value Addition & Market Access: Developing the business side of farming, teaching women how to process and market their agricultural products to maximize their household income.

Seeing is Believing: The Farm Demonstration

One of the most impactful aspects of the day was the farm demonstration. By observing an established agroecological farm, the women could visualize the success of these techniques. Seeing healthy, vibrant crops thriving without reliance on chemical inputs was an eye-opening experience that built confidence and excitement for the transition to organic farming.

A Community-Wide Transformation

The training was exceptionally well-received. Participants expressed deep appreciation for the practical skills they gained, noting that the knowledge provided them with the tools they need to improve their food security and economic independence.

For KOWYN, this is a pivotal moment. The enthusiasm of the Tabut women is proof that our community is ready for this shift. This training is part of our broader, long-term roadmap to empower Ogiek women across the region. We are committed to organizing ongoing workshops and field visits until we achieve a total agroecological transition—ensuring that every farm in our network serves as a beacon of sustainability and health.
