As we ushered in the month of March, the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN) embarked on a vital initiative designed to bridge the gap between ancestral heritage and modern ecological practices. We hosted a comprehensive training session on tree nursery establishment, grafting techniques, and sustainable forest management for the Ogiek youth in Kamara, Koibatek.

At KOWYN, we recognize that the future of our environment depends on the hands that tend it today. By equipping our youth with these essential skills, we are not just teaching them how to plant trees—we are fostering a generation of ecological guardians who are prepared to drive both environmental restoration and economic empowerment.

Cultivating Expertise, Restoring Landscapes

The training was designed to be highly practical, ensuring that participants left with actionable skills they could apply immediately within their own farms and community forest blocks. The program covered:

• Tree Nursery Establishment: Learning the fundamentals of site selection, soil preparation, and creating the optimal environment for young saplings to thrive.
• Grafting Techniques: Mastering the precision of grafting to improve fruit quality and yield, turning traditional agricultural practices into viable, high-quality enterprises.
• Sustainable Tree Management: Understanding the lifecycle of native and fruit trees to ensure long-term growth, health, and resilience against changing climate conditions.
