Start with a Smile, Grow with Purpose: A Greening Day at Seguton Primary School 🌱😊

They say when you start your day with a smile, great things happen—and on this special day, it couldn’t have been more true. As we launched our School Greening Program at Seguton Primary School, we were welcomed by the beaming faces of pupils who were just as excited about the day’s mission as we were.

With helping hands and cheerful hearts, the pupils assisted in carrying seedlings for our tree-planting activity. Their enthusiasm set the tone for what turned out to be a vibrant celebration of environmental stewardship and community action.

After a warm welcome from Headteacher Mr. Charles Tarigo, the school came alive with performances from the pupils, including songs, a poem, a balloon-bursting game, and even an eating competition—all centered around environmental conservation. Winners of the games proudly received books and pencils, a simple yet meaningful reward for their efforts and excitement.

Our Executive Director, Judy Kabilo Sakala, shared her inspiring vision for the program and emphasized the importance of agroecology and community collaboration to ensure long-term success. Her message resonated deeply with everyone present.

Seguton Primary School was more than ready for the day—the planting holes were already dug and enriched with manure, showcasing the school’s initiative and teamwork. It’s no surprise we chose to work with them. The school has already taken commendable steps by launching potato farming and cow-rearing projects, which generate income and help reduce the financial burden of school levies on parents, advancing the goal of free primary education.

In this first phase of the program, we planted 200 fruit tree seedlings—avocado and Tommy Atkins mango varieties sourced from Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), selected for their suitability to the region’s cool climate.

The day ended with a shared meal—warm food, warm hearts, and a feeling of fulfillment. And just as we wrapped up and everyone headed home, the heavens opened with a gentle downpour—nature’s own blessing to crown the event and water the freshly planted seedlings.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Mr. Tarigo, the dedicated school teachers, and the pupils for their tireless effort and passion. A heartfelt thank you also goes to the parents, local pastor, and support staff who showed unwavering support. Though we may not name each of you individually, please know your contributions were felt and appreciated.

This is just the beginning. We look forward to returning to Seguton Primary School to plant another 200 seedlings—and to seeing the fruits of our labor, both literally and in the lives we touch.
