“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Today, that philosophy was brought to life in Koibatek, as the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN) hosted a landmark public review session focused on the future of our people.

In a powerful display of civic engagement, members of the Ogiek, Nubian, and other marginalized communities gathered to scrutinize the First Draft of the National Policy on Ethnic Minorities and Marginalized Communities (2025–2035). This was not merely a meeting; it was an act of asserting community ownership over the national agenda.

Why This Review Matters

For too long, policies affecting marginalized groups have been drafted in rooms far removed from the communities they impact. By convening this session, we ensured that the voices of those who know the landscape, the struggles, and the aspirations of Baringo County are the ones defining the terms of our future.

During the session, participants engaged in rigorous dialogue to ensure the draft policy addresses:

• Unique Cultural Preservation: Ensuring the policy protects the specific heritage and land rights of the Ogiek and Nubian peoples.
• Equitable Resource Allocation: Demanding that future development plans are inclusive of the specific needs of marginalized wards and regions.
• Representation and Inclusion: Highlighting the necessity of having community representatives at the core of government decision-making processes.

From Koibatek to the National Stage

The energy in the room was clear: we are no longer content to be passive observers of our own history. We are actively shaping it.

Following today’s productive discussions, we have consolidated our findings into a unified community report. Our next strategic move is to take this document directly to Marigat, where we will present our positions during the Baringo County Public Participation process. We are committed to ensuring that the perspectives gathered from the ground are not just heard, but are fundamentally integrated into the government’s final policy document.
