At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), we believe that the seeds we sow today dictate the resilience of our community tomorrow. June 15th marked a truly momentous occasion for the Ogiek people in Eldama Ravine as we officially commissioned a brand-new Indigenous Seed Bank at Mlango Moja—a space dedicated to the women who have served as the keepers of our agricultural heritage for generations.

Why an Indigenous Seed Bank?

For the Ogiek, seeds are more than just agricultural inputs; they are a living history of our connection to the land. As custodians of invaluable traditional knowledge, Ogiek women have long understood the necessity of preserving indigenous varieties. By centralizing this effort in a dedicated seed bank, we are taking a definitive stand to:

• Ensure Food and Nutritional Security: Indigenous seeds are naturally adapted to our local environment, offering superior nutritional profiles and resilience compared to commercial alternatives.
