Promoting Inclusion and Empowerment: Gender Equality Dialogue in Koibatek

We at KOWYN (Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network) are proud to announce a meaningful new partnership with the International Indigenous Women’s Forum (FIMI). This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to empower Ogiek indigenous women and girls.

Through this partnership, we are launching the Roots of Resilience Program—a holistic initiative designed to enhance the economic, social, and environmental well-being of Ogiek women and girls in Koibatek. The program centers Indigenous knowledge, strengthens community structures, and uplifts women’s voices as agents of change.

As part of this effort, today we held a Gender Equality Dialogue for the residents of the Koibatek region. The event brought together men, women, and youth from diverse backgrounds to reflect on gender roles and equality within the framework of local customs and traditional systems.

The dialogue provided a platform to address how patriarchal norms, deeply rooted in African traditional structures, continue to influence daily life and decision-making. Through open and respectful discussion, participants explored inclusive pathways toward a more just and equitable community—one where both women and men have the opportunity to thrive.

This event is an important step in our broader goal to challenge inequality, amplify Indigenous women’s leadership, and build a community where everyone is valued and empowered.

Stay connected with us as we continue to share stories, progress, and voices from the Roots of Resilience program. Together, we are building a future rooted in equality, tradition, and strength.
