From Forest to Farm: A New Chapter of Hope for the Ogiek Community

Today marks a pivotal moment for the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN) with the official launch of a landmark three-year project, “From Forest to Farm: Strengthening Food Systems, Biodiversity, and Cultural Heritage for Ogiek Indigenous People in Kenya.” With the vital support of The JAC Trust, this initiative is a direct and powerful response to the historical and ongoing challenges faced by the Ogiek community.

A History of Displacement and a Mission to Restore

As KOWYN’s Founder, Judy Kipkenda, shared in her opening statement, the project’s roots lie in the painful history of forced evictions in the 1980s. These displacements severed the community’s connection to their ancestral lands and traditional livelihoods like hunting and beekeeping, leading to widespread landlessness, poverty, and the erosion of cultural identity.

“From Forest to Farm” is designed to reverse this trajectory. By integrating Indigenous knowledge with modern agroecology, the project will be led by women and youth to secure livelihoods, enhance biodiversity, and build climate resilience for future generations.

Empowering Women and Youth: A Vision for the Future

The project’s key interventions are a comprehensive strategy to address the community’s most pressing needs:

  • Food Security & Agroecology: Training 800 women in sustainable farming, establishing 10 demonstration farms, and creating 20 community seed banks to strengthen food systems.
  • Ecosystem Restoration: Restoring 50 acres of degraded land with 10,000 indigenous trees and installing 100 beehives to boost pollination and honey production.
  • Cultural Preservation: Documenting and integrating traditional agricultural knowledge into daily practices, ensuring the vibrant heritage of the Ogiek community is preserved for all.
  • Economic Empowerment: Diversifying income streams through beekeeping and sustainable farming, while ensuring women and youth are active participants in community decision-making.

Restoring Dignity and a Sustainable Future

This initiative is about more than just farming and reforestation; it is about restoring dignity, identity, and self-sufficiency for the Ogiek people. By tackling poverty, displacement, and cultural loss at their roots, KOWYN and our partners are ensuring that the Ogiek can thrive as stewards of their land and heritage. Today’s launch brought together community members, government representatives, and stakeholders to celebrate this new chapter of hope and resilience, forging a path toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
