At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), we understand that our history—while marked by the deep pain of displacement—is also defined by an unwavering spirit of resilience. Today, we are proud to announce a new chapter in that story: the official launch of our landmark, three-year initiative, “From Forest to Farm: Strengthening Food Systems, Biodiversity, and Cultural Heritage for the Ogiek Indigenous People.”

Supported by the JAC Trust, this project is more than just an agricultural program; it is a holistic strategy to restore the livelihoods and dignity of the Ogiek people, particularly those affected by the devastating forest evictions of the 1980s.

Addressing the Roots of Resilience

The displacement that followed the 1980s forest evictions left many in our community struggling with poverty and a loss of connection to their ancestral lands. For decades, the Ogiek have sought to reclaim not just their territory, but their ability to thrive. This project is our direct, community-driven response to those systemic challenges.

By integrating traditional knowledge with modern sustainable practices, “From Forest to Farm” aims to rebuild the foundations of Ogiek life. Our ambitious targets over the next three years include:

• Empowering 800 Women: We are launching intensive training programs in sustainable farming to ensure that households across our community have the skills and resources to achieve lasting food security.
• Ecological Restoration: We have committed to restoring 50 acres of degraded land. By introducing 100 beehives, we are not only boosting local biodiversity and pollination but also reviving the sacred Ogiek tradition of apiculture.
• Preserving Our Cultural Legacy: Our heritage is stored in the minds of our elders. We are initiating a comprehensive effort to document and archive our invaluable Indigenous knowledge, ensuring it remains a resource for generations to come.
• Fostering Leadership: We are creating platforms to ensure that women and youth have the agency and authority to lead in community decision-making, ensuring the Ogiek voice is heard in every room that shapes our future.

A Community-Wide Celebration

The launch event in Eldama Ravine was a testament to the strength of our partnerships. It brought together local government representatives, community members, and key stakeholders to witness the start of this journey. The presence of so many allies confirms that the Ogiek struggle is recognized, supported, and championed by those who believe in a more just and sustainable world.

Building a Just Future

This project is an invitation to heal, grow, and lead. By restoring our land, we are restoring our identity. By empowering our women, we are securing our food systems. And by involving our youth, we are guaranteeing that the Ogiek culture remains a vibrant part of Kenya’s future.
