At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), we often say that for the Ogiek people, land is not just a commodity—it is our history, our sacred duty, and our future. This week, we took a monumental step in honoring that duty by officially launching a new demonstration farm in Benonin as part of our ongoing “Forest to Farm” Project.

A Living Classroom for Ogiek Resilience

These demonstration farms are far more than patches of earth; they are living classrooms. They serve as hubs where our community comes together to practice and refine the principles of agroecology, transforming once-dormant areas into vibrant, productive food forests.

By intentionally blending indigenous crops, fruit trees, and traditional vegetables, we are doing more than growing food. We are working to restore the natural balance of our landscape, ensuring our agricultural practices support the forest rather than deplete it. This project is our proactive answer to food insecurity, designed to secure a bounty for the generations to come.

The success of this launch is a testament to the power of community collaboration. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Benonin Women and Youth Group for their incredible generosity in donating this prime piece of land to serve as a demo farm. Their commitment to the collective good is the engine that drives this project.
