At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), our work is defined by the incredible communities we serve. Recently, our team had the privilege of spending a day with the Masaita Ogiek Youth Group and the Tachasis Ogiek Women Group to review the impact of our collaborative programs.

Listening to these leaders firsthand—hearing their successes and understanding their evolving needs—is the most vital part of our mission. What we witnessed during our visit was nothing short of inspiring: a community taking ownership of its future through innovation, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to sustainable development.

Masaita Youth Group: Technical Expertise Meets Economic Potential

In Masaita, the youth group is rapidly transforming into a powerhouse of agricultural skill. We were incredibly proud to witness their growing expertise in fruit tree grafting and seedling propagation. By mastering these technical processes, the group is not just planting trees; they are building the foundation for a sustainable nursery enterprise.

The momentum continues with our beekeeping initiative. The five modern Top-Bar beehives provided during our World Bee Day celebrations are now fully operational and thriving. With projections indicating a yield of 25 liters of honey per hive, the group is well on its way to achieving significant economic independence. It is a powerful example of how linking traditional knowledge with modern tools creates tangible, life-changing results.

Tachasis Women Group: Innovations in Organic Agroecology

The Tachasis Women Group continues to demonstrate a true mastery of the agroecology techniques they have learned. During our visit, a group member provided a live demonstration of how she extracts and applies rabbit urine as a potent organic foliar fertilizer.

Seeing our training put into such practical, innovative use is the ultimate validation of our approach. By utilizing locally available resources to nourish their crops, these women are proving that sustainable farming is not only affordable but incredibly productive. They are ensuring their families have access to nutritious, organic food while simultaneously building healthier, more fertile soil for future seasons.

A Call to Action: Moving from Production to Prosperity

The resilience and determination shown by these groups are the heartbeat of the Ogiek community. However, during our discussions, these leaders issued a challenge: we must do more to bridge the gap between production and the marketplace.

Both the Masaita and Tachasis groups are clear about their next steps:

• Market Access: They are seeking support to connect their high-quality honey and organic produce with reliable, fair-trade markets.
• Scaling Support: There is a collective call for continued resources to expand their initiatives, allowing them to reach more families and deepen their impact.

Their call to action is exactly what fuels our mission at KOWYN. We are energized by their ambition and are fully committed to working alongside them to identify new pathways for economic growth and community support.

The Road Ahead

We are incredibly proud of the drive shown by the Masaita and Tachasis groups. They are not waiting for the future to happen—they are building it with their own hands.
