A Pact for Our Future: KOWYN, KFS, and CFAs Unite to Restore 8 Forest Blocks

Today marks a defining moment in the history of the Koibatek Ogiek people. At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), we have always believed that the forest is not just a resource; it is our home, our identity, and our legacy. Today, we translated that belief into action by signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) and our local Community Forest Associations (CFAs).

This pact is more than a legal agreement—it is a commitment to restore and protect the 8 forest blocks that sustain our community.

More Than a Signing: A Story of Shared Stewardship

The process leading to this MoU was rooted in honest, grassroots dialogue. We gathered representatives from across the forest blocks to ensure the agreement was built on the reality of the land, not just policy on paper. Our group sessions were dedicated to:

  • Assessing Current Conditions: Detailed reviews of the status and acreage of each forest block.
  • Documenting Restoration Progress: Recognizing the tireless work our community has already initiated to heal the land.
  • Addressing Ground-Level Challenges: Confronting the real hurdles—from climate-induced degradation to resource management gaps—that our community faces daily.

Clarity in Roles, Unity in Purpose

One of the most significant achievements of this partnership is the clear definition of roles. By delineating the responsibilities of KOWYN, the KFS, and our CFAs, we have created a framework where every stakeholder knows their part in this massive restoration effort.

This clarity ensures that our work is coordinated, efficient, and, most importantly, inclusive. It guarantees that the voices of the women, youth, and elders who live closest to these forest blocks remain central to all decision-making. We are ensuring that no one is left behind as we embark on this journey of ecological renewal.

Our Promise to Future Generations

This MoU is our solemn promise to the children of Koibatek. We are determined to leave them a home that is green, flourishing, and resilient. Through structured restoration, sustainable utilization, and active community participation, we are reversing the tide of degradation.

This vital work is made possible through the generous support of our long-standing partners:

  • Global Greengrants Fund
  • JAC Trust

Their commitment to our vision is helping us turn the dream of a restored, vibrant Koibatek into a tangible reality.

The Path Forward

The signing of this pact is not the end of our journey; it is the starting line. With a formalized partnership in place, we are now better positioned to mobilize resources, streamline restoration activities, and advocate for the rights of the Ogiek to manage their ancestral lands.

As we look toward the future, we invite you to stand with us. Whether you are a community member, a conservation advocate, or a partner, your support is vital. Together, we are not just planting trees—we are growing a future.
