Kitchen Gardens for Food Sovereignty: KOWYN Trains Women in Esageri, Milimani Women.

KOWYN had an inspiring and practical day with the Milimani Women Group in Esageri, continuing our journey towards food sovereignty and household food security.

The work these women are already doing in their community is strong. This training added another layer, giving them the tools and techniques to grow food at home, even when the climate makes it difficult.

Building Water-Wise Kitchen Gardens

Together, we established an organic kitchen garden using three complementary techniques:

  • Conical gardens — compact, vertical growing spaces that make the most of a small footprint.
  • Moisture gardens — designed to capture and hold water, keeping the soil productive with less irrigation.
  • Raised gardens — lifted beds that improve drainage, soil depth, and accessibility.

These techniques are particularly important in dry areas because they help conserve water and moisture, allowing households to produce food even under challenging climatic conditions. When rain is unreliable, every drop matters, and these garden designs are built around that reality.

We planted a variety of nutritious vegetables, including managu, onions, kales, and spinach. The entire process was done organically, promoting healthy soils, nutritious food, and environmentally friendly farming practices. No expensive inputs, no chemicals, just knowledge and care applied to the land.

Growing Food Security, One Household at a Time

At KOWYN, we strive to ensure that every household has access to nutritious food and the knowledge and skills needed to produce it. This is not a distant aspiration. It is something that takes shape garden by garden, household by household.

By supporting women with practical agroecological solutions, we are doing more than teaching farming. We are strengthening food security, building resilience to climate change, and moving closer to a future where every household can be food secure.

When a woman can walk into her own garden and harvest vegetables for her family’s meal, that is food sovereignty in action.
