This week, the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN) headed into the vibrant hills of Sigoro to mark World Biodiversity Day. Under the global theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact,” we partnered with the Moiben Self-Help Group to demonstrate how our traditional practices—when combined with modern sustainable techniques—can serve as a powerful engine for both ecological restoration and community wealth.

The Immeasurable Impact of Our Pollinators

The day was a deep dive into the world of apiculture. As our Team Lead, Judy Kipkenda Sakala, aptly reminded us:

“Bees may live for only about 42 days, but their impact is immeasurable. They are officially classified as animals, not insects, and their role in pollination makes life as we know it possible.”

Recognizing this, our discussions moved beyond simple production to focus on how beekeeping sustains the biodiversity of the entire Koibatek landscape. We reflected on the wisdom passed down by our ancestors and explored how to refine our methods to ensure our bees continue to thrive in their natural habitats.

From Harvest to Market: Professionalizing Our Craft

To ensure our community members are equipped for success, our Programs Officer, Diana Kemunto, provided essential technical training for safe and sustainable harvesting. A key takeaway for our farmers was the importance of equipment:

“Dark clothing poses a threat to bees. Wearing white protective overalls during harvesting helps keep bees calm and prevents them from relocating.”

Beyond the harvest, we conducted hands-on training in value addition. We explored the untapped potential of diverse bee products, including:

• Bee Pollen and Propolis: Nutrient-dense health boosters.
• Candle Wax: High-quality artisanal goods.
• Organic Honey: The foundation of our premium range.

Building the “Koibatek Ogiek” Brand

The highlight of the day was a moment of collective unity. We officially agreed that all our premium, organic products will hit the market under the Koibatek Ogiek Brand identity.

This is more than just a label; it is a commitment to quality and a declaration of sovereignty. By branding our products this way, we are safeguarding our unique heritage and ensuring that our environmental stewardship is recognized and rewarded by consumers. We are taking control of our economic narrative, “from the roots up.”
