At the Koibatek Ogiek Women and Youth Network (KOWYN), we understand that bees are far more than just insects; they are the silent architects of our food security and the vital stewards of our ecosystem health.

This year, for World Bee Day 2026, we joined forces with the Perkerra Environmental Group to celebrate under the theme: “Together for People and the Planet – A partnership that sustains us all.” It was a day of reflection and action, centered on the profound conviction that the survival of the Ogiek people is inextricably linked to the well-being of our pollinators.

Exploring the Value of the Hive

Throughout our celebration, we dove deep into the incredible gifts that bees provide along the entire value chain. Beekeeping is a gateway to a sustainable, biocentric economy, and we highlighted how every product from the hive serves a purpose:

• Honey: More than just a sweetener, it remains a vital symbol of our forest heritage and a nutrient-dense food source.
• Beeswax and Beyond: We showcased the potential of value-added products like natural soaps and balms. By processing these goods locally, our communities are turning forest resources into stable, sustainable livelihoods.

Strengthening Our Commitment: 20 New Hives

To mark the occasion with tangible impact, we officially handed over 20 Kenyan Top Bar Hives to our partners. This distribution is a strategic investment in two directions:

1. Ecosystem Restoration: By increasing the presence of managed hives, we are promoting pollination across our forest blocks, which in turn boosts the regeneration of indigenous plant species.
2. Community Empowerment: These hives provide our groups with the infrastructure needed to scale their apiculture businesses, creating a direct path to economic independence for our youth and women.

Partners in Preservation

The success of this initiative is a collective achievement. We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners—the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), the JAC Trust, and the FIMI (International Indigenous Women’s Forum). Their unwavering support allows us to continue our vital work of preserving bee populations, restoring our natural landscape, and ensuring that our community grows alongside nature.

World Bee Day may be a single day on the calendar, but for us, the work is continuous. Every hive installed and every drop of honey harvested is a testament to the fact that when we protect our bees, we are protecting our future.
